MorningStar is an autonomous coding agent that translates Notion PRDs into implemented code. It orchestrates Claude Code CLI in headless mode, breaking requirements into tasks and executing them sequentially with automatic testing, git commits, and Slack progress updates.
MorningStar ships in two forms that wrap the same engine:

The plugin surface (.claude-plugin/, skills/, agents/) exposes /morningstar:run, /morningstar:dry-run, /morningstar:version, and /morningstar:watch inside Claude Code. The morningstar-runner agent is the autonomous orchestrator invoked by the run skill. Both surfaces call the same Python engine below.
marketplace.json lets users register MorningStar with /plugin marketplace add lonexreb/morningstar and receive updates via /plugin marketplace update morningstar. It mirrors the official Anthropic plugin marketplace format -- one repo, one plugin entry, category: development. plugin.json is the source of truth for the manifest (name, version, description, author, homepage, repository, license, keywords, skill/agent paths); marketplace.json fields supplement it for discovery.
Not a sweeper. MorningStar is a forward-motion agent (PRD -> PR), not an issue/PR housekeeping skill. If you came here expecting backlog hygiene tooling, see COMPARISONS.md for the explicit positioning vs. OpenClaw's ClawSweeper.

Typer application with two commands: run and version.
The run command owns the entire lifecycle:

No function has broader access than it needs. PRD fetch runs in a temp directory with read-only tools to prevent a malicious Notion page from accessing the filesystem. Task generation can read the codebase but cannot modify it. Only execution gets write and shell access.
Prints the ASCII star and "MORNINGSTAR" logo using Rich text styling. Used by cli.py on the run command startup.

Every call to Claude Code goes through _run_claude() in engine.py. This function:

Only the execution phase can modify files or run shell commands. The --permission-mode dontAsk flag is applied to all phases (required for headless operation), but tool restrictions (--allowedTools) limit what each phase can actually do.

The current strategy is sequential (one task at a time). To add parallel execution:

Currently Slack is one-way (agent posts updates). For the agent to read answers:

MorningStar also operates as a scheduled service with no human in the loop. The process-queue subcommand in cli.py and process_queue() in engine.py wrap the existing pipeline with source polling, status bookkeeping, branching, and PR opening.

Status fields on the source systems (Notion Status column, Jira ticket status) serve as the distributed state store — no separate database. Flipping Pending → Running acts as a soft lock: a concurrent runner sees Running and skips.
