Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Scalar quantization now supports per-dimension ranges with configurable quantile bounds, in addition to global ranges.
    • Added a way to build a scalar-quantized dataset directly from device data. The returned dataset includes quantized codes and a quantizer that can be reused for later transformations.
    • Per-dimension quantization supports encoding and reconstruction with a shared scale.
    • Quantizers now provide a maximum reconstruction-error bound for training rows.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the C++ API guidance for quantization modes, quantizer views, and scalar-quantized dataset construction.

Scalar quantization now supports global intervals and per-dimension shifts with a shared scale. Transform APIs accept read-only quantizer views and report a reconstruction-error bound. A dataset builder trains a quantizer, encodes a device matrix, and returns the codes with the quantizer.

Changes: Scalar quantization and dataset integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Quantizer representation and API
cpp/include/cuvs/preprocessing/quantize/scalar.hpp, fern/pages/cpp_api/cpp-api-preprocessing-quantize-scalar.md
The quantizer represents global bounds or per-dimension shifts and a shared scale. Training parameters select a range mode. Transform and inverse-transform APIs accept read-only quantizer views.
Per-dimension training and transforms
cpp/src/preprocessing/quantize/detail/scalar.cuh, cpp/src/preprocessing/quantize/scalar.cu, c/src/preprocessing/quantize/scalar.cpp, cpp/tests/preprocessing/scalar_quantization.cu, fern/pages/cpp_api/cpp-api-preprocessing-quantize-scalar.md
Device training derives per-dimension bounds from data or supplied ranges, then fits shifts and a shared scale. Device transforms encode and reconstruct values with those shifts. Global and per-dimension training record a maximum reconstruction-error bound. Host training and transforms require global ranges. Tests cover quantiles, bounds, validation, error bounds, and numeric cases.
Scalar-quantized dataset construction
cpp/include/cuvs/core/dataset/sq.hpp, cpp/tests/preprocessing/scalar_quantization.cu, fern/pages/cpp_api/cpp-api-core-dataset-sq.md
scalar::build returns an encoded device matrix and its owning quantizer. Dataset manifest accessors return quantizer views. Tests and documentation cover global and per-dimension dataset construction.

Stage the public manifest-view type change.

manifest_view_type now names a borrowed quantizer_const_view<MathT> instead of the owning quantizer type. dataset::manifest_view() exposes this type, so existing callers that assign its result to manifest_type no longer compile. Provide a compatibility path or a deprecation notice and migration guide for these callers. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

As per path instructions, “Breaking changes require deprecation warnings and migration guide updates.” As per coding guidelines, “C++ API changes without proper deprecation warnings” must be flagged.

Stage the public type change around manifest_view_type and
dataset::manifest_view(): preserve a compatibility path for callers assigning
the result to manifest_type, or retain and deprecate the old API before changing
its type. Add the required migration guide update describing the transition,
without removing existing caller compatibility abruptly.

* Owns either a global interval or device shifts and a shared step size.
* Move-only; copy view() to borrow the parameters.
* Migration: replace q.min_ with std::get<quantizer<T>::range_type>(q.value).min_
* (likewise for max_).

Provide both a source-compatible deprecation path and a migration-guide update.

The previous public quantizer<T> was copyable and exposed min_ and max_. The current declaration removes those members and makes the type move-only. Existing code that accesses the fields or copies the type can fail to compile. The header migration note does not provide a deprecation path.

The public-header rule requires both deprecation warnings and a migration-guide update. Provide a transitional API that keeps old field access and copying source-compatible while emitting deprecation warnings, then document the migration in the migration guide. Deprecated accessors alone cannot preserve q.min_ and q.max_ member syntax.

Update the public quantizer<T> API to preserve source compatibility for direct
min_ and max_ access and copying during a deprecation period, with deprecation
warnings; establish a design that supports those exact usages without weakening
the type’s ownership or device-state guarantees. Update the migration guide to
explain the transition to value and view() and the removal timeline.

cpp/src/preprocessing/quantize/scalar.cu:42-63
Critical · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Keep deprecated overloads for the removed const quantizer<T>& API.

The base public header declares transform and inverse_transform overloads that take const quantizer<T>& for double, float, and half. This change replaces each of them with a quantizer_const_view<T> overload. It adds no deprecated forwarding overload. Source callers still compile through operator view_type(). Binaries built against the old header still reference the removed symbols, so they cannot link or run against this build. The repository guideline requires deprecation warnings for C++ API changes.

Restore each removed overload as a [[deprecated]] forwarder that calls the view overload with .view(). Follow the pattern in cpp/include/cuvs/preprocessing/quantize/binary.hpp.

Example for one overload (apply to all twelve removed overloads)
[[deprecated("please create and specify a quantizer view")]] void transform(
  raft::resources const& res,
  const quantizer<double>& quantizer,
  raft::device_matrix_view<const double, int64_t> dataset,
  raft::device_matrix_view<int8_t, int64_t> out)
{
  transform(res, quantizer.view(), dataset, out);
}

I guess the unit tests are long now. Should we try making them more maintainable? Perhaps, have some clean helpers and minimize the nested loops in the test body?

Should we aim for incremental unit tests instead of combinatorial ones? Increment the tests consciously instead of sweeping?
