Hi, I am Natan from team #28080.

I randomly discovered this repo and DSktop to my utter amazement just now.

Half a year ago, I started developing firstslovenia/FTCTui (similar to DSktop) due to frustrations with the driver hubs (for testing), and out of a need for an open source alternative; I reverse-engineered a decent chunk of the protocol to do so!

It is now utterly amazing for me to see that all this time the original source code was just here on GitHub.

Just recently we published it and started to promote the app for other teams. (Not sure if anyone else has used it yet.) It's created as a terminal app (because UI is a pain, and I really dislike Electron) written in Rust (as I have the most experience in the language). I have all the basic features, including exporting telemetry as a .json file, which can be used in e.g. matplotlib implemented, and have some fun things planned.

If this sounds like something you're still interested in, I would love to hear your ideas / input.

(I think that even now with the new control system coming soon, doing open source stuff with the Control Hubs is still relevant.)

(Also, I realize an issue on this repo is not the best format for this communication, but DSktop is archived and there are no discussions here; apologies)

DSktop was my brainchild, but I never got properly started on it. It's fun to see someone take an interest more than 8 years later!

OpenFTC never really became the umbrella for open-source FTC projects that I envisioned at one time. I'm also no longer involved in FTC software, but perhaps someone else might be interested in taking a look at what you've done.

My main suggestion is to focus on safety. Always be thinking about what happens when a thread freezes, communication fails, etc.

Actually, the source code is packaged with the SDK - it's just "hidden" inside source JAR archives, so it's not directly buildable in Android Studio. That's the purpose of this repo - to reformat the source code in a project that can be built in AS.

As an aside, you may also find this useful; it is a fully functional reverse engineered version of v3.7 of the Driver Station app. Robocol has not changed much since then.

That's a great point I do admit I haven't thought that much about. I'll definitely work to minimize risks when things inevitably do fail.

Honestly I haven't worked much with Java outside the official SDK, but I thought that if the source code would be anywhere under a legal license, it would be officially published. So this is almost magical for me lol
