Downloading

Hentoid allows you to collect "content" (e.g. H-mangas, H-manhwas, doujins, artwork...) from various supported websites into your library.

You can do that by various means:

  • Browsing supported websites through the app's integrated browser (see below)
  • Importing download orders directly through the download queue (see below)
  • Importing content you've already downloaded with a 3rd party app (see Using the External libary)

Every content can either be :

  • Downloaded (i.e. by creating image files on your device's storage)
  • Streamed (i.e. by requesting image files from the website only when you decide to read the book)

The Queue screen allows you to control in which order your books are downloaded.

Using the browser

Launching the browser

Hentoid uses an integrated browser rather than an unified UI for various reasons, including :

  • Easier maintenance
  • Ability to pass through browser-based defenses (e.g. Javascript challenges, in-browser rendering)
  • Using your account / finding your favourites with the website's UI

The Hentoid browser can be opened :

  • Through any regular, non-Hentoid app
    • By using the "Open with..." menu when following a link of one of the supported websites
    • By using the "Launch" menu after selecting an NHentai nuke code (NB : The "Text select menu" setting should be enabled first)
  • From inside the app
    • By typing an URL in the library screen's search bar
    • By typing an unique book ID (e.g. NHentai nuke code) in the library screen's search bar
    • By tapping the "website" icon on any content of your collection
    • By selecting "Browser" in the left navigation panel

Basic features

Downloading

The browser shows an action button on the bottom right corner of your screen everytime you reach a gallery page.

Pressing that button sends the content you're viewing to the Queue for downloading or streaming (depending on your settings).

You can also download a book without going to the gallery page, by long-tapping its title or cover when you're on the website's search result page.

Navigating

The Hentoid browser also has specific navigation buttons to :

  • Quickly reach page X of the search results you're viewing (only for Hitomi and NHentai)
  • Quickly go back to the Gallery page after flipping the pages of a book, instead of hitting the "back" button repeatedly

Bookmarks

You can manage your bookmarks with the bookmarks right panel. You can open that panel by tapping the "Bookmark" button of the top bar or by sliding the panel from the right side of your screen.

The bookmarks panel allows you to import any URL list from :

  • A simple text file (one line = one URL)
  • An export file from any regular browser

Advanced features

Blocked tags

You can set blocked tags (e.g. "guro", "scat"...) so that the browser warns you before sending these books to the download queue.

Duplicate detector

Before sending a book to the download queue, the browser looks for similar content inside your library and warns you if it finds potential duplicates.

You can fine-tune how duplicate detection reacts through your settings.

Using the queue screen

The queue screen is where you control in which order downloads are done.

Downloading 101

The queue screen is organized into two parts :

  • The regular queue : Currently downloaded book + books that are queued for future downloads
  • The errors queue : Books whose download has failed

The regular queue

When a download is active, the first non-frozen item of the queue is the one being downloaded.

Available actions on the queue are :

  • Freeze items to keep them in the queue without downloading them (e.g. if you're waiting for WiFi for large downloads)
  • Switch between downloading and streaming
  • Move every item up or down with drag & drop gesture using the handle on their right side
  • Move every item directly to the top or bottom by using the "up arrows" and "down arrows"
  • Invert the queue (i.e. up becomes down, down becomes up)

The errors queue

Available actions are :

  • View the error log and share it (e.g. on the Hentoid Discord)
  • Retry downloading : only failed images, or the entire book from scratch

Importing download orders with the queue

You can mass-import download orders in the queue by using top menu > Import downloads

Accepted formats are :

  • A simple text file (one line = one URL)
  • An export file from any regular browser

Downloading vs. streaming

The app allows two different ways of storing your content :

  • Downloading : Processing the queue item downloads every image of the book on your storage
  • Streaming : Processing the queue item creates an entry in your library and doesn't download any image. Reading the book will request images directly from the website they're hosted on.

FAQ

Q : Site X hosts pictures that are too big for me. Is it possible to download smaller pictures?

A : That's not possible - Hentoid downloads pictures with the best available resolution. If they're too large for your storage, you can use the Transform screen to resize and/or reencode them.

Q : Is there a way to control my download speed?

A : You can use two settings to change your download speed :

  • Parallel downloads : Controls the number of images downloaded simultaneously
  • Download speed limit : Caps the global speed of the downloaded

Q : Streamed books from site X always fail. Is the app broken?

A : The following sites switch their image hosts very often, which makes streaming very complicated :

  • Hitomi
  • E-hentai / ExHentai

Additionally, any website that removes content or change its domain also breaks streaming.
