fix(loop_closure): stop LM trial escalation at the f32 cost noise floor - #171

Conversation
sparse_pose_graph_optimize evaluated cost and relative cost tolerance in f32. Near the optimum, the relative cost change between iterations falls below the f32 noise floor (~1e-6 relative rounding error for thousands of squared f32 residuals), causing valid descent steps to register as cost rejections. The solver would then escalate damping 10x per trial until hitting STEP_SIZE_TOLERANCE or max_iterations, burning trials and causing loop-closure corrections to be dropped as unconverged. Accumulate the total residual squared cost in f64 while keeping residuals and Jacobians in f32, and treat rejected trials whose cost increase is within the f32 residual rounding floor (residual_components * f32::EPSILON) as converged rather than escalating damping. Fixes kornia#166
Add unit and regression tests pinning sparse PGO behavior at the noise floor: - Verify that a 500-keyframe graph with odometry and loop edges converges cleanly in 7 iterations (well below max_iterations=30, and down from 19 trials pre-fix), with damping staying <= 1e-3 (preventing 10x trial escalation to 1e3), reducing cost by >500x to <= 3e-5, and producing a usable PgoResult for the live map. - Verify that exceeding max_iterations reports converged=false and usable=false. - Verify that incompatible/divergent loop edges report usable=false.
Add zero-cost offline pose graph dump and replay capability: - When KORNIA_PGO_DUMP=<dir> is set, optimize_pose_graph serializes the input keyframe poses, PGO edges, and optional gravity vector to plain-text dump files in the specified directory without adding new external serialization dependencies. - Provide load_pgo_dump and an #[ignore] test replay_pgo_dump in sparse_pgo.rs that loads a dump via KORNIA_PGO_REPLAY=<path> and logs LM trial iterations, damping values, and acceptance history. - Include unit test validating serialization and deserialization roundtrip.

Dump writing and replay support crates/kornia-slam/src/loop_closure/pose_graph.rs, crates/kornia-slam/src/loop_closure/sparse_pgo.rs |
When KORNIA_PGO_DUMP is set, optimization attempts to write poses, edges, and optional gravity to a numbered dump file. Test support loads dump records, checks a round trip, and provides an ignored offline replay test. |

The change stops the loop-closure solver from exhausting its trial budget near the optimum because of f32 cost rounding. The dump and replay hooks are opt-in. No concrete merge-blocking defect remains in the reviewed changes. The author notes that the actual MH_05 graph has not yet been replayed.

Explanation
The PR satisfies the coding requirements in directly linked issue
#166. PGO accumulates squared residual costs and relative-cost checks inf64while keeping residuals and finite-difference Jacobians inf32. A rejected trial within the estimatedf32noise floor reports convergence without further damping escalation. Tests cover noise-floor convergence, failure cases, dump round trips, and replay support. The longer-term f64 residual and analytic-Jacobian option is not required.

Explanation
The changes stay within issue
#166. Production changes address PGO cost precision, rejection handling, and the requested diagnostic dump and replay hook. The added tests directly verify these changes and the required failure behavior. No unrelated change is identified in the supplied whole-PR summary.

555-567: 🎯 Functional CorrectnessThe branch can return the last accepted poses as converged before increasing damping. However, the inspected source does not establish that a first within-floor rejection can be followed by a lower-cost trial at higher damping.
The noise-floor test asserts a reduced final cost and a usable result, but does not cover the claimed first-trial scenario. The retry test uses a forced step of
100.0, without establishing that its rejection is within the noise floor. The proposed correction is therefore based on an unproven recovery path rather than an established contract violation.crates/kornia-slam/src/loop_closure/pose_graph.rs-156-156: 1

dump_pose_graph writes rotations using to_cols_array() in column-major order, but load_pgo_dump parsed tokens assuming row-major ordering and passed transposed indices into from_cols_array. This transposed all loaded pose rotations and edge measurement rotations. - Read elements in column-major file order and rename bindings to c0r0..c2r2. - Strengthen dump_and_load_roundtrip with non-symmetric rotations and elementwise tolerance assertions across poses, edges, and gravity.
KORNIA_PGO_DUMP serialization was previously performed after the solver call, skipping graph dumps when the solve failed or raised an error. In addition, I/O errors were discarded with let _. - Move dump invocation before sparse_pose_graph_optimize so failed graphs are dumped. - Log a warning with eprintln containing the target path and error on write failure.
DUMP_COUNTER started at 0 per process and std::fs::write unconditionally overwrote target files, replacing previously dumped graphs in the same directory. - Return the created PathBuf from dump_pose_graph. - Open dump files using OpenOptions create_new(true) and advance the index on ErrorKind::AlreadyExists to avoid overwrites. - Update dump_and_load_roundtrip to use the returned path and assert that successive dumps yield distinct files.
…ctions Add concise doc comments explaining design rationale and invariants across touched PGO dump, solver, and test functions: - Document column-major rotation layout and atomic file creation in dump_pose_graph and load_pgo_dump. - Document f64 cost accumulation rationale in active_total_squared_residual_cost and accumulate_edge_squared_cost. - Document noise-floor convergence, trial rejection, and usability invariants across tests. - Add test verifying that a trial rejection within the f32 cost noise floor converges with last accepted poses.
When KORNIA_PGO_REPLAY was unset, replay_pgo_dump printed a message and returned early, vacuously passing the test when run with --ignored. - Panic with an actionable error when KORNIA_PGO_REPLAY is missing. - Log final accumulated cost on successful replay for verification.
Fixes #166
The PGO solver computes its cost in f32. On graphs with a few hundred keyframes and several loops, the rounding error in that sum is around 1e-6 to 1e-5, which is about the same size as the default
cost_tolerance. So once the solver is near the optimum, every step looks like a failed trial and damping goes up 10x each time until it either hits the step-size tolerance or the 30-trial cap. If it hits the cap, usableis false and the loop closure never gets applied. What I changed:
6 * num_edges * f32::EPSILON.max_iterations, conflicting loop edges) still reportconverged: falseandusable: false.KORNIA_PGO_DUMP=<dir>to write,KORNIA_PGO_REPLAY=<path>with an ignored test to replay). It's in its own commit, so it's easy to drop or move to a separate PR if you'd rather not have it here.On synthetic graphs (odometry plus 4 loop edges):
usable: falsebefore, converges in 7 after.I haven't replayed the actual MH_05 graph from the issue. The replay hook is there so that can be checked, and if the reporter shares their dump I'm happy to run it.
I left out option 4 from the issue (f64 residuals with analytic SE(3) Jacobians) to keep this small. It would be a good follow-up.
Testing: fmt, clippy and
cargo testfor kornia-slam (loop_closure, system_api) and kornia-sensors all pass. I developed this on Windows, so two things fail there that aren't related to this change.apps/kornia-slam-app/src/tui.rsuses Unix-only APIs, so the workspace doesn't build on Windows. Andfrontend::tests::stereo_preparation_matches_the_recorded_baselinefails the same way on a cleanmain, since its hash fixture was recorded on Linux. I'm relying on the Linux CI for those.Summary by CodeRabbit
