feat(fonts): add Kernel Sans, a generated neo-grotesque family - #9209
We want a house sans that sits close to Inter and SF Pro in proportion and
texture, but reads as more engineered and technical. No existing family gives
that blend, so this adds one, generated from code so every weight and future
tweak comes from the same rules.
How it works
Each glyph is a Python function of per-weight parameters that combines simple
shapes (rectangles, superellipses, strokes) with boolean operations from
skia-pathops. A weight is just another parameter set, derived from the stem.
params(wght) ─► glyph functions ─► outlines ─┬─► static OTF / TTF / WOFF2 (300–800)
├─► kerning measured from the outlines
└─► all six weights as masters ─► compat.py ─► variable TTF / WOFF2
Booleans can start contours anywhere and split curves differently per weight,
so compat.py pairs contours by optimal assignment, aligns them on their
corners and splits smooth runs by arc length before building the variable
font. Only a real topology change blocks it, and a test catches that.
What
tooling/fonts/kernel-sans/: generator, built fonts, specimen, tests, and AGENTS.md / DESIGN.md / README.md.
Design (DESIGN.md): Inter/SF Pro skeleton (cap 720, x-height 540) with four
rules: squircle curves, 45° chamfers on free stroke ends, ink traps that grow
with weight, and square chamfered dots.
313 glyphs: Basic Latin, Latin-1, the rest of Windows-1252, dotless i/j,
fractions and superiors, math, arrows.
Features: kern, liga (fi, fl), tnum (default figures are proportional), zero, case, calt (colon raised between figures; dashes, arrows and math
raised between capitals or figures), ss01 (single-storey a), ss02
(serifed I and tailed l, distinct from 1).
Six static weights, Light to ExtraBold, plus a variable font (wght 300–800,
default Regular, avar mapping weight classes to stems). Every static is a
master, so the variable font's named instances equal the static files. All
files pass OTS. Builds are reproducible.
Kerning (kerning.py) compares the white area between class representatives
with a well-spaced reference pair. Accented letters and alternates share
their base's class, and every member pair is kept from touching over the
full glyph height (an overhanging ï after f or T opens up). Values land
within about 10 units of Inter on key pairs.
specimen/index.html: live weight slider, type tester, glyph inspector and
outline views of each detail.
Nothing in the apps uses the font yet.
Follow-ups
Hinting: the TrueType files are unhinted, which is fine for the web and macOS
but rough on Windows at small sizes.
Italics and wider language coverage (Latin Extended-A, Greek, Cyrillic).
Wiring the font into the web or marketing app, if wanted.
Kernel Sans is a neo-grotesque in the Inter and SF Pro mould with squircle
curves, chamfered stroke ends, ink traps and square dots. Glyphs are drawn
in Python with boolean shape operations, so each weight is a parameter set.

The variable font matches the 300/400/800 outlines contour by contour
and maps weight classes to stems through avar. Kerning is measured from
the outlines at each weight. The specimen page is generated from the
built fonts.

Boolean outlines can start contours anywhere and split smooth curves at
different places per weight. Matching now aligns contours on their
corners and splits smooth runs by arc length, so only real topology
changes block the variable font.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01QNf2TTVAAYCnL7jhRuk4YQ
The shoulder ink trap now starts below the crotch, and the n's right stem
meets its arch edge to edge, so neither leaves weight-dependent slivers.

…gits
Figures are proportional by default so a 1 doesn't leave a hole in
running text; tnum swaps in the tabular forms. Contours are paired across
weights by optimal assignment on their relative positions, so repeated
parts such as ellipsis dots can't swap places in the variable font.

A review against Inter found spacing loosening as weight rose, heavy
horizontals clogging ExtraBold counters, small punctuation at Light and
Regular, and kerning that jammed round and open pairs. Sidebearings now
shrink with weight, horizontals thin to 0.74 of the stem, dots track the
stem, and kerning uses a gentler factor, a collision guard over the full
glyph height, and separate classes for W, a and figures. Vertex ink
traps get one shared helper.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01QNf2TTVAAYCnL7jhRuk4YQ
Vertex ink traps use the shared crotch trap, so they read as short
notches instead of slits. E F L T Z get real right sidebearings, M N W
gain weight, and the thorn's counter stays open at ExtraBold. Adds an
I with bars for the ss02 disambiguation set.

… dot
Rings keep their counters at ExtraBold and the capital ring no longer
sinks onto A's apex. Dieresis and dot accents use the same square dot as
i and punctuation, and the curved marks share one stroke and chamfer.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01QNf2TTVAAYCnL7jhRuk4YQ
The e eye and s counters keep their share of the white as weight rises,
v w x y z get wider bodies and real sidebearings, f widens, r's terminal
keeps an open lower corner, and vertex traps use the shared crotch trap.
Adds a tailed l for the ss02 disambiguation set.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01QNf2TTVAAYCnL7jhRuk4YQ
…tuation
Figure crotches use the shared crotch trap, 3 and 8 keep their waist
centred so the upper counter stays open, proportional figures get
Inter-like sidebearings, and the infinity sign gets crossing loops.
Punctuation gets a longer, heavier hyphen, an open question mark at
ExtraBold, a narrower straight double quote, roomier brackets, a capital
M inside the trademark sign, and a raised colon for times.

Fonts carry a fixed head timestamp so a rebuild of unchanged sources
gives identical binaries. The Python is formatted with ruff; outlines are
unchanged.

Expanded character coverage with accented letters, symbols, alternate forms, and ligatures.
Documentation
Added guidance on the typeface’s design, character set, web usage, and font-building workflow.
Adds Kernel Sans source code for weight-dependent glyph outlines, static and variable font generation, OpenType features, and kerning. It also adds command-line build and proof tools, specimen pages, documentation, and tests for glyph coverage, outline properties, compatibility, and compiled features.
Priority: Normal
Merge Risk: Low · up to 3ebb0
This adds a font generator and a standalone specimen page; the apps do not use the font yet. Before merging, make the specimen step in build.py skip when otf output or the default output directory is not in use. Also add a doctype, charset and viewport to the specimen template, and fix the focus, labelling and animation issues on the specimen page. None of these affect production users.

The repository copy of the specimen is now a full HTML document with a

keyboard input on the weight slider stops the intro animation, and the
build only refreshes the committed specimen from a default build that
includes OTF.

… kerning
A verification pass found ExtraBold lighter than Inter's, round strokes
darker at the corners than straight ones, and figure classes measured as
lowercase so T1 and 2,450 were jammed. Stems rise at 600-800, counters
are squarer than outer contours, capitals sit closer to lowercase, dots
grow, and figures, brackets and contractions get their own kerning
rules. Vertex ink traps end in a flat floor, stylistic sets apply before
ligatures, and rounding no longer leaves zero-length segments.

…ylistic sets
Chevrons grow with weight so their notch stays open, the capital ring
stays inside the line box, accent dots share the i dot's size cap, and
the cedilla stays above the descender. Accented single-storey a and
serifed I composites let ss01 and ss02 reach accented text.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01QNf2TTVAAYCnL7jhRuk4YQ
Why: the period kept the letters' shrinking sidebearing while the other
dot punctuation stopped shrinking above Regular, and calt failed to
compile on proof builds without figures.
What: add Params.psb for . , : ; ! and use it in core and punctuation;
emit calt only when figures exist; record the stem-join trap depth, the
wide-crotch exceptions and the tabular one's base in DESIGN.md.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01QNf2TTVAAYCnL7jhRuk4YQ
Why: at ExtraBold the 4's counter closed to a sliver, and the full-depth
crotch traps where the 2 and 4 diagonals meet their bars read as slits.
What: thin the 4's diagonal above Regular, use half-depth traps at the
2 and 4 bar crotches, and note the one-sided rule in DESIGN.md.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01QNf2TTVAAYCnL7jhRuk4YQ
Why: work in progress from the final review pass, saved so the branch
matches the working tree.
What: lowercase round glyph adjustments.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01QNf2TTVAAYCnL7jhRuk4YQ
Why: shortening f's crossbar left ff and ft set loose, and the area
measure can't close them because the bars already sit nearer than its
floor allows.
What: add an f/t right kerning class, paired only after f and t, with
the bars set 0.3 of the n|n gap apart.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01QNf2TTVAAYCnL7jhRuk4YQ
Why: the fonts and specimen were stale after the final glyph, spacing
and kerning changes, and ruff check reported unused unpacked names,
stale noqa comments and unsorted imports.
What: regenerate fonts/ and specimen/ from the current sources; fix the
lint (no effect on the output); build.py is executable to match its
shebang.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01QNf2TTVAAYCnL7jhRuk4YQ
Why: the x-height label sat on the left, under the hero word's first
letter, at both desktop and phone widths.
What: hang the label below its line on the right; regenerate the
specimen and its preview image.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01QNf2TTVAAYCnL7jhRuk4YQ
Why: the static Bold ƒ lost most of its stem (the rotated hook missed the
stem by a float32 hair and pathops dropped the join), and the heavy ~
folded into a cusp where the inner crest fell below the middle's tangent.
What: union the ƒ stem first and take its ends from the hooks' bounds;
steepen the tilde's middle at heavy weights until the inner crest stays
convex.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01QNf2TTVAAYCnL7jhRuk4YQ
Why: with only 300/400/800 masters the variable font's Medium, SemiBold
and Bold instances differed from the static files, because thinner heavy
horizontals, capped dots and superiors are not linear in the stem.
What: all six weights are masters, so the named instances equal the
statics; keep MVAR for underline and strikeout; build STAT without Mac
names. compat.py keeps node order when equalising runs across more
masters. --compat loads every module and counts glyphs that fail to draw.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01QNf2TTVAAYCnL7jhRuk4YQ
Why: the variable font inherited the Regular master's Mac name records,
OS/2 left strikeout and script metrics at zero with a hard-coded Unicode
range, and mirrored glyphs shipped with reversed contours.
What: write Windows name records only; set the REGULAR bit on every
non-Bold weight; derive strikeout from the hyphen and use standard
script sizes; compute Unicode ranges from the cmap; reverse contours
after a mirror transform.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01QNf2TTVAAYCnL7jhRuk4YQ
Why: accented and ss01 forms were missing from the kerning classes, l, d
and i borrowed n's values so ascenders and dots ran into T, V and Y, and
nothing kept an overhanging accent (ï after f, T, V, quotes) from
touching its neighbour.
What: add the accented and alternate forms to their base classes; give
l/d, i and accented i their own classes; keep every member pair of every
class pair clear of touching whatever the limits. Tests check class
membership and that no kerned pair touches.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01QNf2TTVAAYCnL7jhRuk4YQ
Why: calt raised the colon only between plain figures, so slashed zeros
broke it and dates, ranges and sums set their dashes on the lowercase
axis unless the app enabled case.
What: the colon rule takes every figure form; dashes, arrows and math
operators take their .case form between capitals or figures, also across
a single space.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01QNf2TTVAAYCnL7jhRuk4YQ
Why: the fonts and specimen were stale after the fixes, and AGENTS.md
and README described three masters and colon-only calt.
What: regenerate fonts/ and specimen/; document six masters, kerning
class rules, the float32 join gotcha and mirrored contour direction.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01QNf2TTVAAYCnL7jhRuk4YQ
Why: the specimen's feature table still described calt as colon-only.
What: update the calt row and regenerate the specimen and its preview.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01QNf2TTVAAYCnL7jhRuk4YQ
Why: the checks named ruff format but not the lint pass that the
generator is kept clean against.
What: add ruff check to AGENTS.md.
