feat(agents): show coding agent updates on the Agents home - #9246
With several coding agents running, the only way to see what they need is to open each session. Agents that are blocked on a permission, a question, or a tool approval sit idle until someone notices, and there is no single place to see which agent PRs are open.
How it works
The Agents home page (New conversation) shows pending updates from your coding sessions as a stack under the composer. It rests collapsed like a notification center, so the page doesn't scroll, and unstacks when clicked. Each card answers in place, and has Chat about this (adds a mention of the session to the composer draft) and Open session.
session list (soup, live via agent_session_updated)
└─ coding sessions, owned, not archived
├─ turnState = blocked → acquire AgentSession headlessly
│ → pendingInteractions → one card each
│ → answer via interaction controller /
│ tool approval (the user's own action)
└─ turnState = running, idle > 20 min → "stalled" card
Chats can read the same updates through a new read-only ListAgentUpdates tool. Agents are not allowed to answer permissions or questions for the user (ControlEvent::authorized, tool approvals' "a person must answer"), so this PR keeps that rule: the tool's result renders the same live cards, and the user clicks the answer. The tool description points the agent at ManageAgentSession to message a coding agent and at ContentSearch + ReadAgentSession to recall earlier decisions from past chats.
Everything is behind the enable-agent-updates flag (on in dev; no PostHog flag yet).

What
@uiNotificationStack: generic stacked cards that unstack with a staggered animation; cards render once per key so a list refresh doesn't remount a half-typed answer. Gallery page and tests.
features/agent-updates: core (update selection, stalled rule), primitives (acquire only blocked sessions, release when they unblock, answer through the existing interaction and tool-approval paths with an agent.updates.answer span), components (card), views (AgentUpdatesStack).
Agents view: the stack on the New conversation page, wired to the existing session list and openConversation; Chat about this writes a session mention into the draft.
Agents sidebar: an Open PRs section above Conversations listing open/draft coding-session PRs with the existing rows (they stay in Conversations too).
agent_session: ListAgentUpdates tool in the coding-agent toolset, list_updates on CodingAgentService, the internal GET /internal/coding-agents/updates route (acting user from internal headers), a Postgres candidate query, and the agent_session.list_updates span.
Migration: partial index on agent_session (owner_id, turn_state, modified_at DESC) for blocked/running sessions, created concurrently.
Tool UI: ListAgentUpdates renders a summary row plus the live updates stack for the returned sessions.
Docs: agent guide entries for the Open PRs section, the updates stack, and ListAgentUpdates.
Follow-ups
Create the PostHog flag and roll out.
A dedicated orchestration history (which chats used these tools) needs the calling session id in tool requests; the existing search tools cover it for now.
The stalled threshold (20 minutes) is a heuristic; there is no stalled state on the backend.
Why: the Agents home will show pending coding-agent updates as a stack, built in parallel by several changes that need one shared contract.
What: add the enable-agent-updates flag and a list-only NotificationStack in the UI components whose props the stacked implementation will keep.
Why: Coding sessions with active pull requests are hard to find in the mixed conversations list.
What: Add a flag-gated Open PRs section using the existing session rows and context actions, with a pure selector and behavior tests for desktop and touch.
Why:
Agent updates need a compact card stack that keeps the newest action visible
without growing the Agents home page.
What:
Measure and animate keyed cards through expansion, insertion, and removal.
Add the UI gallery demo and interaction coverage.
Why: The Agents home needs actionable updates from the sessions it already lists.
What: Select owned coding sessions, pending interactions, and stalled runs in a pure core model with tests.
Why: Pending coding agent requests and stalled runs need a place on the Agents home.
What: Acquire blocked sessions headlessly, render update cards in NotificationStack, answer through existing controllers, and wire chat and open actions with mobile spacing.
Why: the stack re-ran a card's render whenever its item object changed, so a list refresh remounted the card and lost a half-typed answer in the question form.
What: render each card once per key like For, document that cards read live data themselves, and stub ResizeObserver in the updates stack test now that the real stack measures cards.
Why: the agent guide is how agents verify the Agents view, and it didn't mention either flag-gated surface.
What: document the Open PRs sidebar section and the pending-updates stack on the New conversation page, with how to check them.
Why: Chats and agent sessions need one read-only view of coding agents awaiting the user's attention.
What: Select recent blocked and stalled sessions, fold pending interactions, and expose them through an authenticated internal route and AI tool. Preserve owner identity across the HTTP client and generate SQLx query metadata.
Why: Agent update results need a readable surface in chat and agent sessions.
What: Generate the ListAgentUpdates TypeScript types and show a count, session summaries, and truncation notice in an expandable tool row.
Why: a chat that reads the user's agent updates should let them answer in place, the same as the Agents home, since agents may not answer for the user.
What: the tool result renders the updates stack for the sessions it returned, opening waiting sessions live so cards track the current request; the stack takes plain session facts and Chat about this is optional where there is no composer.
Why: chats can now read the user's pending coding-agent updates, and the guide is how agents verify chat tools.
What: document what ListAgentUpdates returns, its limits, the live cards in its result, and how chats follow up.
Why: after rebasing, the updates wiring read fields the session list query no longer has, the sidebar tests missed newly required props and expected a removed Archive action, and the update card resized its buttons from a wrapper.
What: read sessions from the query's entities like the conversations memo, pass the required sidebar props and assert the context-menu wrapper instead of Archive, and drop the wrapper's descendant button sizing.

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added a collapsible stack of coding-agent updates on the new-chat page, highlighting sessions waiting for a response or inactive for 20 minutes.
Respond to permission, question, and tool-approval requests, chat about an update, or open its session directly.
Added an Open PRs section to the Agents sidebar, listing active coding sessions with open or draft pull requests.
AI chat can now retrieve and display coding-agent updates.
Documentation
Updated the agent guide with details on updates, responses, and the Open PRs section.
The change adds owner-scoped coding-agent updates for pending permission, elicitation, and tool-approval requests, plus sessions inactive for at least 20 minutes. It exposes update data through an internal endpoint and a read-only tool, then adds update cards and a collapsible stack in the web app. A feature-flagged Open PRs section lists eligible coding sessions in the Agents sidebar. The changes also add tests, documentation, and a database index for update candidate queries.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 000bc
Older open PRs may be missing from the sidebar, and update cards can show stale or incorrect session status. Fix these paths and prepare the SQLx cache before merging.

updates is a plain function. Each call re-runs selectAgentUpdates, rebuilds both Maps and returns a new array. AgentUpdatesStack calls it about five times per render pass: the Show condition, two title reads and items. Wrap it in createMemo so each dependency change computes it once.

Translate the stack label and title with t(), and make the count a plural message.
The region label "Updates from coding agents" is hardcoded. The title branches on length === 1 to pick between two strings. Add one plural message, { one: '{{count}} update from a coding agent', other: '{{count}} updates from coding agents' }, and call t(key, { count }). Do this for the aria-label text too.
As per coding guidelines: "Don't split one sentence into singular and plural keys chosen by the count; one plural message covers every number."

Load open PRs beyond the loaded conversation pages.
agentConversationsQuery does not filter by pull request state. It returns the owner's sessions sorted by updated_at, 100 per page. openPullRequests then filters only the loaded props.conversations. An open PR older than the loaded pages does not reach the section.
The automatic load does not cover this case. It runs only while the filtered total() is below FILTERED_PAGE_FILL (20). A loaded page with 20 or more matching rows stops it. The Open PRs list has no load-more or scroll handler. The section can therefore stay empty or incomplete until the user scrolls the Conversations list to its end.
Give the Open PRs section a paging path that loads the remaining open PRs, or a separate query that returns them. Do not rely on the Conversations list.

When a retained ListAgentUpdates result is rendered after the session changes, sessionsOf uses historical kind and since values as current turnState and updatedAt. A resumed stalled session can therefore render a false stalled card. A resumed interaction session can remain blocked in createAgentUpdates and stay acquired.
Pass the current owner-scoped AgentSessionEntity list to this stack, as the Agents home already does. Do not synthesize live session state from historical result items.

Update the ListAgentUpdates stack so sessionsOf receives the current
owner-scoped AgentSessionEntity list, as the Agents home does, and builds each
card’s turnState and updatedAt from that live session state. Do not synthesize
current state from historical kind or since values in AgentUpdates items.

Translate the tool-row text with t(), and use a plural message for the count.
"Read agent updates" and "No updates" are hardcoded English. update${count === 1 ? '' : 's'} builds the plural by hand. Use one plural message such as { one: '{{count}} update', other: '{{count}} updates' } with t(key, { count }). Call t where the label renders.
As per coding guidelines: "A message whose wording depends on a number is plural" and "Render user-visible text with t('<namespace>.<key>')".

Update the tool-row label rendering in ListAgentUpdates to pass both “Read agent
updates” and the count-dependent update text through t(); use a plural message
with one and other forms and pass count to t() instead of building the plural
suffix manually.

#!/bin/bash# Expect: one cache entry for the new candidates query.
rg -l 'LEFT JOIN agent_configs config ON config.bot_id = s.bot_id' .sqlx
rg -l 'LIMIT 26' .sqlx

Add the workspace SQLx cache entry for this query.
crates/agent_session/src/outbound/postgres.rs adds a production sqlx::query!. The workspace-root .sqlx directory is absent, so offline checks cannot use the required metadata. Run nix develop --command just prepare_db from the repository root and commit the generated cache. Do not hand-edit the JSON.

Generate and include the SQLx offline metadata for the production query in the
`sqlx::query!` block, using the repository’s established metadata-generation
workflow so offline checks can resolve it.

Why: the public MCP tool reference is generated from the tool registry and CI fails when it is stale.
What: regenerate apps/docs with the ListAgentUpdates page and navigation entries.
Why: each card repeated the session name in its summary and question cards showed the question twice, and in dark mode the cards behind the front one were nearly invisible, so the stack did not read as a stack.
What: summaries now start with the action ("Wants to run …", "Has a question"), and collapsed cards behind the front use a lighter surface.
Why: cards behind the front one shrank from their top edge, so only about 3px of each showed and the collapsed stack read as two faint lines.
What: shrink behind cards toward their bottom edge, so each shows its full offset below the card in front.
Why: the pull request needs visual proof of the stack and the Open PRs section.
What: screenshots of the real components with sample data; removed in the next commit.
Why: CI's biome check flagged the summary helper after its signature changed.
What: apply biome formatting.

Why
With several coding agents running, the only way to see what they need is to open each session. Agents that are blocked on a permission, a question, or a tool approval sit idle until someone notices, and there is no single place to see which agent PRs are open.
How it works
The Agents home page (New conversation) shows pending updates from your coding sessions as a stack under the composer. It rests collapsed like a notification center, so the page doesn't scroll, and unstacks when clicked. Each card answers in place, and has Chat about this (adds a mention of the session to the composer draft) and Open session.
Chats can read the same updates through a new read-only
ListAgentUpdatestool. Agents are not allowed to answer permissions or questions for the user (ControlEvent::authorized, tool approvals' "a person must answer"), so this PR keeps that rule: the tool's result renders the same live cards, and the user clicks the answer. The tool description points the agent atManageAgentSessionto message a coding agent and atContentSearch+ReadAgentSessionto recall earlier decisions from past chats.Everything is behind the
enable-agent-updatesflag (on in dev; no PostHog flag yet).Screenshots
