perhaps a more intuitive way to control individual default volume for all samples? since XM doesn't support channel or instrument volume, there's no need to display such info anyways
of course it can be problematic if the module uses volume commands

maybe a mixer could be destructive so that it alters volume commands relatively but handling fades might be too much

agreed about the mixer, or instead of destructive, disable the instrument-fader when the current pattern contains hardcoded volume-values.
Perhaps a simple instrument-mixer (one slider per instrument) could relatively increase/decrease the sample-volumes of that instrument.
Note that the [abbreviated] 'step' of slider1 refers to instrument 01 ('stepper synth'), and slider2 to instrument 02 and so on.
Some ideas regarding a mixer:
