Usage of the Tree Component #157

I hope that the Tree Component can help me solving a difficult requirement I'm facing. However, I can't figure out if the component matches my requirements. Would be great if you can help me out.
My requirements is that users should select Items for Inspection (N:N), where all selectable items are grouped in a tree view (grouped by Area, 1:N).
Do you think that would be possible with the Tree Component? Or is this only for hierarchical records?
