Stale contributor list on repository homepage after rewriting Git history #211560
🏷️ Discussion TypeQuestion BodyHello everyone, I'm having an issue with the Contributors section on my repository's homepage. Repository: https://github.com/slimshadyxroot1-png/Root-Studio I accidentally made several commits using my alternate GitHub account, adhikarisubodh9991, instead of my main account, slimshadyxroot1-png. I corrected the commit history using Git commands and pushed the updated history to my repository's main branch. Here is what I've verified so far: Running git log origin/main --format="%an <%ae>" | sort -u shows only my main account's author identity. Searching the remote main history for my alternate account's email, author name, and Co-authored-by trailers returns no matches. The Insights → Contributors page shows only my main account. However, the Contributors section on the repository's main homepage still displays my alternate account. More than 24 hours have passed since I corrected the history. I've also checked my local branches and confirmed that some old commits remain in local backup history, but they are not present in the corrected origin/main history. Is there a way to refresh or recalculate the contributor list displayed on the repository homepage? Could a GitHub Community Manager or staff member help investigate whether this is stale cached contributor data? I would appreciate any help. Thank you! |

Nothing is left in the repository for the sidebar to read, so what you see is a cached list on GitHub's side, and only Support can clear it. I checked Root-Studio from the outside. The contributors API returns only gh api repos/slimshadyxroot1-png/Root-Studio/contributors --jq '.[] | "\(.login) \(.contributions)"'The docs describe this exact case: "After force-pushing, rewriting history, or deleting commits, repository contributor displays and statistics can take about 24 hours to refresh", and if it is still wrong after that the repository owner can contact Support (Viewing a project's contributors). There is no user-side refresh for the homepage list, and community managers here cannot trigger one. Open a ticket at https://support.github.com/request under Repositories and give them: the repository name, the date you pushed the rewritten history, the current tip |
