Project dead?

I just find out about this project and want to use it to improve another project. But it looks like there are no commits for 5 years.

Maybe add some other contributors to the project to resurrect this great project or check the PRs regularly to let the community do there thing.

Is it still possible to use this in new projects or is it better to use other libraries?

For the ESP32, you can continue using this project with some library updates.
However, for the ESP8266, TLS support is very limited. It may still work with plain HTTP requests, but secure protocols such as WSS, MQTTS, or any other TLS-based connections are essentially no longer viable.

This is not a limitation of this project specifically, but of the ESP8266 ecosystem itself. Many dependencies no longer provide proper support for ESP8266, focusing instead on ESP32.

As a result, TLS-related issues are common across multiple projects on ESP8266. If your project uses an ESP32, you are in good shape. If it relies on an ESP8266 with TLS connections, continuing development will be difficult, even when using alternative or async-based libraries.

I would expect that when cloning this repo that it just compiles if this is working. But it does not.
I currently not have the time to investigate in fixing this before I can use it in another project. Any forks that does compile that you know of?

I used esp8266 for my project EMS-ESP (emsesp.org) that's been in constant development for the last few years. Although it's highly customised and optimised for my project it does have a lot of additional features. If you had the time, you could turn it back into a framework but it's quite some work and you need to be good at C++/ReactJS. Another alternative is https://github.com/theelims/ESP32-sveltekit

Because of EMS-ESP I learned about this framework. Running EMS-ESP already a couple of months without issues. Great project and thanks for that.

I will investigate if I can reuse esp32react parts of EMS-ESP.

Sorry, really not had enough time / motivation for this recently, but I agree that i don't really want it to die - so let's get it updated!

I'm not sure MQTT is working on esp8266 yet, I'll continue looking at that. Everything else is compiling and working OK for me with the latest platform and updated libs for Async TCP / HTTP / WS.

I'll give the UI a little refresh this week, too, aiming for:

• upgrade to Vite
• upgrade MUI
• upgrade React

Then we can merge this and at the very least it will be working again for people - plus there are some other open PRs which I've never really looked at so I'll try and get to them this week too.

Yes, I've already migrated the project to Vite and am in the process of fixing various issues with the new linting rules. I'm not really thinking about anything beyond refreshing the libraries and tooling at the moment but would appreciate someone looking it over for sanity later on. I'm out this morning (UK time) but have this afternoon too finish this off.

I'm going to try and get some other libs upgraded MUI/Notistack before I merge it - but this branch at least builds and it's not built on deprecated tooling any more :) nearly there.

Have merged what I've done so far, it's in a better place so I didn't see any point in getting it perfect before merging - see how you get on.

Leaving this open because I have more on my TODO list:

• MUI & Notistiack Upgrade
• Probably replace pass-by-reference parameters (JsonObject&, JsonArray&, JsonVariant&) with pass-by-value
• Investigate MQTT connection problem on ESP8266
• Probably rename this repository to "esp-react" because 8266 is less popular now and the name is misleading
