Error messages should follow a consistent style

We've decided for now that error messages should begin with a lowercase letter. Variable names and type names should follow a consistent format; I've started using backquotes following Markdown, but single quotes would work too.

I made all the messages I could find lower case and put some backquotes around types. Considering this done.
